My favourite winter landscape

FRANCISCO DE GOYA.
 LA NEVADA

La nevada, is an oil on canvas painted in 1786 by Goya on the subject of winter.

La Nevada, is one of the tapestries that Goya designed for  the royal palace in Madrid, just after he became royal painter.

Its style can be adscribed to romanticism, an artistic, literary and intellectual movement originated in the late 18th century and flourished from the early decades of the 19th century untill mid-century.

The painting focus on a group of three cloaked peasants, returning home through a desolate and snowy landscape.
The palette chosen by Goya in this artwork is plenty of cold colors; being the white of the snow the predominant one.
The beatiful composition of landscape, people and animals are clearly drawn, showing the interest of the Romanticism  for the overwhelming power of nature.

The peasants wrappep in their cloaks, carrying nothing and exhausted, introduce a critical perspective to an apparently lighthearted scene. It depicts accurately the harsh living conditions of the lowest social class.

Personally speaking, the painting is an excellent example of Goya`s unique point of view on social matters, which was more deeply developed in later paintings.
